Social media consists of all the platforms such as Instagram and Facebook that allow its users to create content and interact with other people. A lot of great things have been achieved with the help of these sites such as family members reuniting, raising awareness, helping noble causes and so on. With everything that is going on in the world right now, it is hard to remember all the positive things social networking sites have done for us. Are they actually improving our lives?

Ask yourself: How much time do you spend on your phone scrolling through social media? Have you become addicted to it? When was the last time you went a day without checking your phone?

There are a lot of concerns when it comes to using social media because it has evolved tremendously since it was created.

It has made the spread of fake news easier, these leading to actual real-life consequences. 

We have gone from the information age into the disinformation age. How are we going to get over this pandemic when in the age of fake news, with people saying it is just a hoax and spreading false information about its origin and cure?

Another disadvantage is that it’s very addicting. Companies like Snapchat, Youtube, Facebook, have the business model to keep us engaged on the screen, fundamentally competing for our attention. Especially, it is extremely addicting to people who are a part of gen Z, who grew up with social media. It makes you waste your time, when that time could’ve been used to do something productive like studying.

Also, everything you do online is being watched, tracked and recorded. What you look at, for how long you look at it, how you react to it. Leaving you with no privacy.

Taking all these arguments into consideration, take this chance and take a break from social media. Starting a detox is easy, sticking with it is the hard part. If you want to do this, start by deactivating your accounts and deleting all of the apps off of your phone. If you use a computer, go the extra step and block all the social networking sites. With all this free time you’ll have from now, get a new hobby, or focus on improving yourself. Feel free to do this for as long as you feel is necessary, or until you see a change in yourself.

Un alt minus al acestor platforme de socializare este, după cum am menționat, dependența ce ne-o creează. Companii precum Facebook sau Google prin Youtube au intenția de a ne ține lângă ecrane și concurează deci pentru atenția populației. Cu atat mai greu ne este nouă, celor din noua generație, sa stăm departe de internet, când practic am crescut cu el în brațe. Ne trezim de multe ori la sfârșitul zilei că nu am realizat nimic, ca tot ceea ce am făcut azi a fost sa îmi pierd anapoda timpul navigând pe social media, când puteam foarte bine să învăț sau să petrec timp în natură. 

Nu în cele din urmă, după cum ne place sau nu să credem, suntem în permanență supravegheați, controlați și manipulați în acest mediu online al “siguranței” și “confortului”. Nu exista termenul de intimitate în aceasta lume virtuala, plină de pericole la tot pasul.

Așa dar, te invităm să ni te alături în a lua o pauza de la social media. Sigur, partea cea mai grea este evident începutul. Dacă vrei un punct de start, începe prin a-ți dezactiva conturile de pe aceste platforme sau să îți dezinstalezi pur și simplu aplicațiile de pe telefonul mobil. Dacă stai mai mult pe calculator, fii cu un pas înainte și blochează accesul la astfel de site-uri.
