When and how to get involved?

Imagine this. You’re in class trying to complete your essay when a group of people come in and present the organisation they’re a part of: an institution for elderlies which offers all kinds of activities for them to take part in. They’re here to recruit people who’d like to volunteer. At this moment in time, you have to make a choice: either sign up and dedicate some of your free time to this or don’t sign up and spend your free time some other way. What would you do? 

Your decision will determine what happens next. Let’s say you chose to volunteer for this organisation. Therefore, you spend the following months helping out the elders. During this period of time, you develop your communication skills and make new friends. The summer holiday is near so a goodbye party is organised. Everyone there starts sharing their feelings. That’s when you realise how grateful you are you decided to do this and how happy you are to help others and give back to the community. So, over the summer you start getting involved in more and more projects. At one point you get this brilliant idea and decide to make it happen. 

Now let’s go back and say you chose to pass on this opportunity to volunteer. You invested your time and effort into your hobbies or you focused more on perfecting your grades. You might regret the fact that you didn’t sign up, because opportunities don’t always show up, but you can always spend your free time doing independent work.

Both of these options are beneficial in unique ways. Getting more involved and dedicating yourself to a good cause helps you grow as a person and it helps you mature more rapidly. Whereas focusing more on your personal preferences helps develop some of your other skills. For example, if you enjoy painting and you choose to spend your time towards doing that, the effort and time put into your passion will help improve your painting skills.

Finding a balance between the two is ideal. Spend half of your free time helping others and the other half doing what you enjoy. But try not to make an impulsive choice just so you’ll regret it later. You can also find a way to combine the two. Consider the following situation as an example: let’s say you tremendously enjoy playing the guitar but also want to give back to your community and you don’t know how. You can go and sign up to volunteer at a youth centre where you can teach kids how to play the guitar. If no such youth centre is available, you can take matters into your own hands and put together something similar. This way you get to do what you enjoy and aid others at the same time. 

If such opportunities are presented to you, dedicate some of your time to that cause, we can assure you it’ll all be worth it in the end!

Când și cât să te implici?  

Imaginează-ți următoarea situație. Te afli la școală, în clasă, încercând să-ți termini eseul, când un grup de oameni intră în încăpere şi prezintă organizaţia din care fac parte: o instituţie pentru vârstnici care oferă o multitudine de activităţi. Ei sunt aici pentru a recruta tineri dornici să se înroleze ca voluntari. În acest moment trebuie să iei o decizie: fie te înscrii şi îţi dedici o parte din timpul liber acestei cauze, fie nu te înscrii şi îți petreci timpul liber într-un mod diferit. Ce ai alege să faci?

Decizia ta va determina ce se va întâmpla în continuare. Să presupunem că ai decis să faci voluntariat pentru această organizaţie. Aşa că îţi petreci următoarele luni ajutându-i pe vârstnici. În această perioadă, îţi dezvolţi abilităţile de comunicare şi îţi faci prieteni noi. Se apropie vacanţa de vară, aşa că este organizată o petrecere de rămas-bun. Toţi cei de acolo încep să-şi împărtăşească sentimentele. Acesta este momentul în care îţi dai seama cât de recunoscător ești că ai hotărât să faci asta şi câtă fericire îți aduce săvârșirea faptelor bune. Aşadar, pe parcursul verii te implici în din ce în ce mai multe proiecte. La un moment dat îţi vine o idee strălucită şi decizi să o pui în practică.

Acum să ne întoarcem la întrebarea anterioară şi să presupunem că ai luat decizia de a nu face voluntariat pentru această organizaţie. Ţi-ai investit timpul şi efortul în propriile pasiuni sau te-ai concentrat pe perfecţionarea notelor. S-ar putea să regreţi faptul că nu te-ai înscris, deoarece oportunităţile nu apar întotdeauna, dar poţi oricând să îţi petreci timpul făcând lucruri de unul singur.

Ambele opţiuni sunt benefice în moduri diferite. Implicându-te mai mult și dedicându-te unei cauze bune te ajută să te dezvolţi şi să te maturizezi mai repede. Pe de altă parte, focusându-te mai mult pe preferinţele proprii ajută la dezvoltarea unui set diferit de abilităţi. De exemplu, dacă îţi face plăcere să pictezi şi alegi să-ţi petreci timpul făcând asta, efortul şi timpul pe care le-ai depus în pasiunea ta te vor ajuta să îţi îmbunătățești abilităţile de pictură.

Găsirea unui echilibru între cele două opţiuni este ideal. Petrece-ţi jumătate din timpul liber ajutându-i pe cei în nevoie şi cealaltă jumătate – făcând ceea ce îţi place. Dar încearcă să nu iei o decizie impulsivă doar pentru a o regreta mai târziu.

Poţi găsi o modalitate de a le combina pe cele două. Să luăm următoarea situaţie ca exemplu: să spunem că îţi place foarte mult să cânţi la chitară, dar în același timp îţi doreşti să-ți ajuți comunitatea din care faci parte şi nu știi cum. Te poţi înscrie ca voluntar la un centru de tineret şi îi poţi învăţa pe tinerii de acolo cum să cânte la chitară. Dacă nu există un astfel de centru de tineret, poţi organiza tu ceva similar. În acest fel, vei ajunge să faci ceea ce îți place și să îi ajuți și pe ceilalți în același timp.

Dacă astfel de oportunităţi ţi se prezintă, dedică-ţi o parte din timp unei cauze, iar noi te putem asigura că totul va merita până la urmă!
