Interview Erik Birinyi, ThinkUp Academy’s president: “Our aim is to inspire people and help them dream big”

Erik Birinyi, the president and one of the founders of ThinkUp Academy, a student at Transylvania College in Cluj-Napoca, shared with us more details about the process behind this project.

ThinkUp Academy Blog: I know you came up with the idea for the academy after creating and hosting the International Youth Summit of Transylvania. Could you tell us a bit more about that and about what inspired you?

Erik Birinyi: Organising that conference was one of the biggest challenges of my life. In the beginning, when I presented the idea, few people believed that we could achieve something that complex. Creating an international leadership, well-being and debate conference from scratch wasn’t easy.  But with 30 devoted students and the whole Transylvania College staff, we were able to do it. While we have learnt a lot about the process of organising a project of those dimensions, we had a lot of fun together. In the end, the summit was very successful and it was exactly how we wanted it to be. This gave us the impulse to further develop our program and organise 9 more editions of this conference in the future. After students around the world saw what we did, people were coming to us asking how they could create something similar, telling us how cool it is to organise conferences and events for students and the community. We tried to offer some advice, but everybody was worried that the process was too time-consuming, that their grades and academic achievements will be affected and that their parents or school won’t let them put together something like that. They were discouraged and did not see the point of making the effort. That was the moment when we decided to create ThinkUp Academy. An Academy from students to students, where we can make projects and ideas come to life by working together. We decided to offer free mentoring, support and guidance for young social entrepreneurs in creating and implementing their own projects, including close collaboration with schools, institutions and organisations from Romania, but also from all around the world, in order to emphasise the importance of the students’ involvement in their communities.

ThinkUp Academy was supposed to organise the second edition of IYST. How difficult was it to cancel this event and is the summit going to take place later in the year?

I am going to be honest with you, it was a very difficult moment for us. We worked very hard for almost a year to organise an event. Unfortunately, the month before it was supposed to take place it was cancelled because of the worldwide pandemic.

We had everything planned and we were so excited to welcome the international delegates, the speakers and the guests for the second edition, but we had to postpone it. At that moment, I felt angry, but I quickly realised how fortunate I was to work with people so dedicated to a cause. So we helped each other through those times, as a team, and now we are more united and motivated than ever.

We are really looking forward to the second edition of the International Youth Summit of Transylvania in October, where we are planning complex and exciting activities for our conference.

How did you come up with the name for the academy?

Interesting question. We wanted the name to reflect the process of creating something. It was our aim to inspire people and help them dream big. So what I am suggesting for the future students of our academy is to believe in themselves and obviously to think up!

Can you briefly explain the structure of your academy?

We have a very clear organisational structure which is designed to provide the best experience for our students. We are organised in four boards, directors, mentors, ambassadors and young advisors. Mentors are the ones helping the students organise their projects, having a very clear process of mentoring established. We are constantly trying to improve and further develop our academy, the other boards are responsible for this process.

As you previously stated, mentors are a group of people in the academy that work directly with the students that need help with their projects. What do you look for in a mentor?

I think the most important characteristics for a mentor are experience, curiosity and kindness. We are looking for young individuals who already created their own projects and contributed somehow to the community. Our mentors are very passionate and curious about helping students, believing that leadership starts with a personal example. Therefore, they are going to be relatable and helpful in the process of creation.

What are some of your responsibilities as the academy’s president?

I believe that in every separate field we are working on with our students, there are mentors within the academy who are more informed and skilled than me. This is why it is so great to work with them. What I know best is how to bring all these qualities together and work for one cause, helping students. I know very well every single person I work with and their satisfaction in the academy is important to me. My job is to help almost 20 people work together, while they are proportionately productive and satisfied with their work environment.

What would you say is the most unique thing about the ThinkUp academy?

That it is founded and led by students. It is impressive that the initiative of the young people was strong enough to help others in our community to thrive and this is just the beginning.

What are your goals for the academy?

I think it would be amazing to help as many students as possible. One of our main goals is to start working with students from all around the world after we are consolidated in Romania. We want to help communities not just in Romania, but also in other countries. But I believe we should take everything step by step. Also, it would be great to organise 9 more successful youth conferences in Cluj-Napoca. So we have a lot going on. We hope that we can change mentalities and show that together we can make a difference!
